"who is this guy and where is he hiding?"

(Fanfare, USA)

Welcome!

Per Vollestad has established himself as one of Norway's leading baritones. His remarkable recital debut in 1986 was soon followed by his debut at the Norwegian Opera. He is also regularly invited as soloist with all the Norwegian orchestras. He has toured exensively in Europe with several conductors including Frans Bruggen, Phillip Herreweghe and Sigiswald Kuijken.

Vollestad is highly praised for his Lieder interpretations, with recitals in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Moscow and Dubai. As an opera singer he has performed in Milan, Vienna, Brussels, Innsbruck, Antwerp, Gent and Tokyo. He has participated on more than 20 CD recordings and his solo recordings of Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Grieg and Sinding have all received splendid reviews at home and abroad. After his CD debut, Fanfare (USA) asked "Who is this guy and where is he hiding?" And later the American Record Guide stated "His previous recordings have elicited hosannas from the reviewers. Th hear what he does with Ragnhild and Ragna is a revelation ... his singing of them brought tears to my eyes. A wonderful disc."

Mr. Vollestad has a stron interest in Norwegian vocal music. He has a Ph.D. from the Norwegian Academy of Music, the topic of which was Christian Sinding and his songs; and as a part of this work he recorded 118 Sinding songs. His Sinding biography was released in 2006 and in 2007 he received the Edvard Grieg award.

But Vollestad is probably one of the most many-sided norwegian singers. His CD "Stygge piker" is something quite different: an album with old radio advertisement songs from the 1920s and '30s, songs praising the likes of margarine, cigarettes, chocolate, and long underwear.
